My Napoleonic project continues, very much in the background, but it does continue. These lovely Victrix conversions by Lionel Bechara represent the company of 113 sappers/miners at Waterloo. Later this summer, they will join the lovely Garde minis that Lionel and David Imrie painted for the Waterloo Replayed project. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some might say that a French Napoleonic army that is around 65% Garde is a little top-heavy, but I have a cunning long-term plan for their employment...</div>

The Imrie/Bechara Grenadiers are progressing!<br />

Below are the Chasseurs, based some years ago. I've decided to go with smaller battalions, which will make gaming more practical, and should enable me to get three or four divisions, a side, on a big table.<br />

Almost three years gone... and my Spanish Ulcer is still playing up. Although I've not based any more minis, I've recently bought a couple of hundred more painted French Ligne and Garde and some artillery and allies. I am waiting, fingers crossed, for some helpful Nottingham-based manufacturer to bring out some plastic Russians in greatcoats (and for a gap to open in my gaming schedules!). Hopefully I'll post again before 2020.... :-)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I had a very big push in December on my French Ligne, and by Christmas I managed to get four more battalions painted and based (although not flocked), bringing my total to six. My objective is to get eight battalions ready, and a battery of guns, and call it a division. Most of the minis were painted by others, some by David Davies and others are from eBay, which I heavily overpainted. I also based three battalions of young guard and half a regiment of hussars (not shown), so it was a productive pre-Festive period! Alas I had very little time for photography.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Despite their apparent simplicity, these have eaten up so much of my precious painting time! But I will not be beaten. Last night a grinding painting session finished these 81 minis (33 of whom were painted by David Davies) barring backpacks. I will need to paint another 18 to field 3 battalions. You'll note that I have mounted a GMB standard and two Fanions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Below are three of the Marie-Louise recruits. These are Warlord plastics with a mix of Warlord and Perry heads. I have really taken to this set from Warlord, and expect to use a lot more of them in due course.</div>

<br />
<span style="text-align: justify;">The first two battalions are more-or-less finished, but alarmingly more figures have appeared on the painting tray- the beginnings of a third battalion! </span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In other news Kawe of <a href="http://westfaliaminiatures.com/" target="_blank">Westfalia Miniatures</a> very kindly "exchanged" some of their products for a set of my <a href="http://bigredbatshop.co.uk/" target="_blank">"To the Strongest!" rules</a>. He gave me a very generous exchange rate, thanks Kawe! :-) Consequently I have some lovely new toys, some of which I started to prep last night, including a colonel for the new battalion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As well as being beautifully sculpted, these are amongst the cleanest-castings I have ever come across (and I buy Aventines!). I struggled to find a use for my file. Much, much better than the quality of the Perry castings. Westfalia also make lovely vignettes which one doesn't come across in other ranges, and their guns and vehicles have no peers.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There's a lot of painting in these, even in a chap in a greatcoat! I've finished another seven painting sessions, so up to 11 now, with perhaps 4 more to go. 15 sessions seems like a lot of sessions for 39 figures painted from scratch and a little highlighting on another 33. Id anticipated a much faster painting rate on account of the greatcoats. :-( However, I think they will look great when finished! :-)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Four painting sessions sees the Marie Louises mostly blocked in, and gradually converging with the mostly-finished figures from David.. Tonight I need to grit my teeth and paint the crossbelts, and tomorrow start on water bottles and bayonets. There's a surprising amount of work in a bunch of scruffy guys in dirty macks (that look a bit like Frank Spencer).</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've put flocking the Young Guard to one side whilst, butterfly-like, I start work on a couple more battalions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I recently bought a battalion of Neapolitans from David Davies, but my need for French Ligne is far greater and I've decided to re-badge them as French, reserving the distinctive Neapolitan standard bearer, pioneer and officer for a later project.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The rump of the minis from the battalion have been reinforced by a draft of Marie-Louises, the young, poorly equipped recruits drafted by Napoleon around the time of the defeat at Leipzig. Following an idea from Guy Bowers, I've made these up using the Warlord Late War French torsos and spare heads in pokelem caps taken from the Warlord and Perry plastics sets.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tTnCYOOQcGc/VGX8Z4lD3EI/AAAAAAAAL9A/KpgiAZFJ-KM/s1600/Marie%2BLouises.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tTnCYOOQcGc/VGX8Z4lD3EI/AAAAAAAAL9A/KpgiAZFJ-KM/s1600/Marie%2BLouises.jpg" height="200" width="178" /></a>I'm going to paint the greatcoats on the recruits in khaki and an off-grey shade to give what will now be two battalions an irregular appearance. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are three of the Marie-Louise recruits. The two on the left have Warlord bodies, and the one on the right a Victrix body which is a good match for the former. The centre head is Warlord, and the other two Perry. I've distressed the greatcoats with drill and craft knife, to give them a ragged appearance. They should be relatively quick to paint!</div>

Another work in progress shot of my Young Guard Tiralleur Brigade, now on their bases and grouted. The three Batallions of recruits have now joined the veteran battalion in the foreground (based back in 2012). The minis were painted by David Davies with some finishing and weathering by me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've already painted a few test minis for a first Guard Voltiguer Battalion; this <i>has to be done</i>! A matching Brigade of Voltiguers would be a fine thing, they have great red flags that would complement the above.</div>

...so I have been making steady progess with finishing the Young Guard, and had been starting to fret that, at the current rate of progress, I would run out of unpainted Perry Napoleonic French plastics some time in late 2019. However I checked the loft and found another 4 unopened boxes, so that should time me over until the early 2020s! ;-)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am particularly keen to get hold of the Perry French figures in greatcoats. Would anyone out there like to swap their spare greatcoated figures, for their Bardin-wearing equivalents, or plastic Victrix? I can take as many as you want, or can spare... please drop me a line at simonmiller60 (at) gmail.com.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
After a whole year's delay, I've returned to my Napoleonic project. Here are three battalions of Young Guard Tiralleur recruits, painted by David Davies, that I'm finishing so that they can join the finished battalion in the foreground. They are on temporary bases. Once they are done I'll have enough French minis to fight a division level battle.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Napoleonics are a tricky distraction from my passion for Ancients, but sometimes a little variety is necessary!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ny9VWFb6gto/UkLpbhnfrpI/AAAAAAAAG-0/YCDV5sOZugI/s1600/DSCN3313.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ny9VWFb6gto/UkLpbhnfrpI/AAAAAAAAG-0/YCDV5sOZugI/s320/DSCN3313.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Jay (left) led the Confederate forces, and I the Union. Ian (right) briefly explained the rules to us.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We deployed in two lines facing each other, with half a dozen units a side. I carefully positioned both of my batteries so that they would have no targets, and Jay did likewise- in fact Jay's guns were masked by his other troops, and remained unable to fire all game! This was due to our ignorance of the terrain and artillery rules, we'd have a much better idea, another time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The card play proved easy to grasp, rather easier than Maurice, I thought. Cards modify shooting, movement, casualties and so forth. There are also special events played at the start of a turn, and cards that can cause chaos to the other player's movement plans during a turn.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Jay rather sportingly advanced and let me take a pot at him first. Later he charged: this proved premature, as my boys gave his a bit of a kicking and shot him again, to boot, after he recoiled. I have formed the impression that one shouldn't charge until either the enemy have been weakened by a firefight, or one has drawn the right hand of cards. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I found some of the cards quite humourous, and there were several attempts at Southern drawls, and much general hilarity, especially as the second bottle of wine of the evening was drained.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I shot him up, Jay played cards left, right and centre to remove casualties. Despite this, his losses mounted until I was informed that I was close to victory. At this point I drew a fabulous hand, and was able to shoot with two additional cards that modified his casualties upwards, and then play 2 more cards to charge through the smoke to hit a unit of Jay's square in the flank, deciding the game.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-heoeg0KsCUU/UkLyQxbbIQI/AAAAAAAAG_E/7NnaAH88SW0/s1600/DSCN3315.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-heoeg0KsCUU/UkLyQxbbIQI/AAAAAAAAG_E/7NnaAH88SW0/s320/DSCN3315.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The rules seem very easy to grasp, and by the end of the evening we knew pretty much what we were up to. The cards give the game a very narrative quality, and added a lot of character. I'll certainly play Longstreet again!</div>

<br />
I've just completed my first unit of Napoleonic artillery; a pair of 12 pounders of La Garde.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j6b1OyxnmUQ/UfehAuaMqZI/AAAAAAAAGco/v6yeKyYhDl8/s1600/DSCN3196.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="170" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j6b1OyxnmUQ/UfehAuaMqZI/AAAAAAAAGco/v6yeKyYhDl8/s320/DSCN3196.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I felt that the Perry crew of 4 was somewhat meagre, so added a couple of Foundry gunners and a couple of Perry/Victrix plastic hybrid figures, for variety. The other figures also had greatcoats which ties in with the look of the army I am slowly building for early 1814. The buckets are conversions, and the ammo boxes are from Front Rank.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Basing posed a bit of a dilemma. I had wanted them on a 45mm frontage, to match the base size of my infantry, but found that 60mm was the bare minimum width for the gunners to be positioned around the guns in a broadly historical manner. I could be tempted to go even wider...</div>

A WIP shot of the Garde gunners. I hope to have them ready for a game on Tuesday. A vicarious mix of Perry, Foundry and Victrix conversions...</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I realised today, that it has been lmore than a year since I last posted on this blog! I've been very busy with sundry projects, and working on my rather better-known <a href="http://bigredbat.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">ancients blog</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am planning to pick it up with the Napoleonics, though, partly because I can (almost) field a complete army, albeit mostly Garde, and partly because my friend Ian is working on an exciting Napoleonic project. I have also had an idea for a simple grid-based rule system that will hopefully prove to be as much fun as a similar ancients system that I'm developing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whilst my Napoleonic posts will be irregular, I promise that it won't be a year before I post, again!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">A quick shot of our second (or third?) Maurice game, last week. Our British forces, on the defensive (at bottom of photo), are partially encircled by a converging French (top) attack. We Brits didn't deploy terribly well, but we did successfully march all of our right flank cavalry behind our lines to strenghten the left, which was cool and did surprise out opponents. However, the game was clearly going the French way when we ran out of time.</div><br />
I'm still very much enjoying Maurice; I do wish I had a 28mm army to game it with.BigRedBathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05622983082204451158noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3934183348509433048.post-52390786555365061512012-06-01T00:12:00.000+01:002012-06-01T00:12:43.217+01:00Pictures of Matchstick Men<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div style="text-align: justify;">Tonight my friend Ian brought his new 6mm armies around; these are almost entirely assembled from matchsticks! Below are 8 battalions of British line. The minis are simply lengths of matchstick cut to 6mm (7mm for guards) and painted in appropriate uniforms. The horses and riders are each assembled from 3 or 4 lengths of matches. A labour of love!</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j8Z27wBGYhI/T8f3DgngtcI/AAAAAAAAEI8/ojSpoGQGHfM/s1600/DSCN2260.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j8Z27wBGYhI/T8f3DgngtcI/AAAAAAAAEI8/ojSpoGQGHfM/s320/DSCN2260.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Below, a shot of a brigade of French guard cavalry drawn up in support of a French line battalion:-<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">We played a very pleasant battle with the new Maurice rules from Sam Mustafa, which I'll write about tomorrow. But tonight I did want to show the miniatures, which are extremely effective, en-masse. The final shot, below, is of most of the French battle line (Anglo-Hanoverians in the distance):-</div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">I was very impressed with the minis that Ian has produced, which gave a very good impression of large armies at a negligible cost. Next week, I must take a pic of the artillery, which was splendidly scratch built.</div></div>BigRedBathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05622983082204451158noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3934183348509433048.post-51919302458237901052012-05-11T19:19:00.004+01:002012-05-23T08:40:40.797+01:00Flogging Frogs (Sold, Thanks)<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GRr2rJShrQI/T61W5C0R_LI/AAAAAAAAEDg/o8J-qHM93-E/s1600/DSCN2080.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="123" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GRr2rJShrQI/T61W5C0R_LI/AAAAAAAAEDg/o8J-qHM93-E/s320/DSCN2080.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
