The Other Napoleonic Games at Salute

I'm afraid these photos are nowhere near as nice as the ones of the 54mm game.

The Corunna "game" was a terrific spectacle with a lot of story going on in it.  I say "game" because it was effectively a diorama, and on the BRB scoring system, non-wargames only score half points.  However there was an awful lot of fantastic modelling there, and even on half points it would score very high!   I estimated 3 French Divisions at 1:20 scale, perhaps 2000 French miniatures, alone, and a total 4000 minis on the table?

Rubbish photos.

Looks like I had the shakes.

As it happens, I had been out drinking the night before with the French Provisional wing of Muswell Militia.

But the blurry shots have more to do with me having lost a critical part of my tripod.

The ships were bloody amazing!

I'm not a huge fan of 15mm, but the Aspern-Essling game was excellent.  The number of minis was astonishing, the villages looked like villages and the game like a proper battle.  What is more, they  were actually playing it which is hugely brave at a show like Salute!  Alas my photo fails to do it justice.  That is a game I'd really love to play, and it has made me very curious to read up about the battle.

  1. Sorry I missed you Simon. The venue was so freaking huge that it was nearly impossible to coordinate a planned meeting much less hoping to 'run into' someone. Yes, the Corunna game and the 54mm Victrix games were spectacular, eh? The Aspern-Essling was impressive but it almost seemed too crowded somehow - perhaps I'm off on that. Anyway, yes, its my favourite Napoleonic battle and if you want a reading list for it please drop me a note.

  2. Hi Curt, I was sorry we failed to organise a meet. I missed a few friends, it was chaos there for me.

I ddn't think Aspern was toooo crowded, I've committed far worse atrocities! I thought the handy flags saying which corp was which, were brilliant, it was great to be able to see where the French cavalry reserves were, for example, including Lasalle. Will drop you a note at some stage! Next year...

    Cheers, Simon

  4. Hi Rodger, yes 3 good Nap games.

Not very much in the way of ancients, though... no really stonking games (aside from the Late Roman/Sassanid one which was "getting there").

  6. Spoke to the guys running Corunna and they said 3000 figures... oh, and that they had played the game to completion 4 times in total - all with historical results though some were closer than they would have liked.... they didn't play it on the day simply because it was so huge, and because they had to answer so many questions.... a worthy winner though!

  7. Hi Steve, I'm glad to hear that they had already played it, and I can understand why they chose not to play on the day. It was a remarkable achievement! Quite a collection of minis.

    Cheers, Simon
